Richard Hoar

Position : Divisional Director

Guy Hayward

My working weeks begin with a 6am alarm call in leafy South Bucks, I’ve always lived outside London and so its commuter train into Marylebone and on into the city for me. This journey gives me a good opportunity to digest a paper (the Times in my case) or read on the return journey (I enjoy reading about history, finance and spy novels – clearly an eclectic mix).

Once coffee and toast have been consumed I’m ready to kick off the week, I guess love the buzz of a Monday morning and can’t wait to crack on with the week. I look after a range of different permanent businesses for GM so spend Monday updating on the previous weeks business with managers and consultants in these areas to understand wins and losses the previous week and what each business is looking to execute in terms of delivery in the week ahead.

Once these meetings are concluded my time is focussed across a variety of different commitments including leading our Key Account management effort for all our Banking and FS clients where I will work with consultants from across the business to ensure we are delivering on our major accounts. Where possible I try to retain as much contact with our clients as possible so look to try and meet with clients on a weekly basis to understand how we are performing and get their views on the market and challenges they face in their business. I see our service to our clients as being about more than just finding candidates (although I appreciate this is our key deliverable) and as such its important to be able to really understand a clients business so we can endeavour to deliver a partnership that gives them more in terms of knowledge transfer and intelligence than perhaps some recruiter relationships.

I believe in creating an environment within my businesses where individuals can thrive and deliver their best performance so as such my job put simply; is to create and nurture the platform that allows highly talented people to be successful, to develop and to enjoy their experience of being with the firm. We are very proud of our low staff turnover and high performing culture and I see my role as crucial to ensuring this remains a key element of our offering at Goodman Masson.

Given the nature of my role no two weeks are ever really the same as I can be working on anything from a project to improve candidate management across the business to supporting a team or consultant in relation to a pitch or a search project. It’s this variety that makes it so exciting and keeps you engaged and committed; yes it can be challenging but as long as you end the week more winning than losing you can head home on a Friday with a spring in your step waiting to embrace the weekend.

My downtime is spent with my family (I have a son, Harry who is 19 months who keeps me running about) with another on the way. Apart from playing with Harry and avoiding my wife’s weekend list of DIY tasks, I enjoy good restaurants and watching Liverpool and QPR (the latter where I have a season ticket).
