Position: Director, Temporary Business
I joined Goodman Masson in August 2009 after spending seven years at my previous company. My remit from Guy Hayward (CEO) was simple - Grow a market leading temporary team from the foundations already laid.
To do this I needed 4 things - great people, great clients, great processes and a great vibe around the floor.
In my career I have recruited in, and managed, teams across a multitude of disciplines in both temporary and permanent markets. While I enjoy them both, temporary recruitment has always held the biggest interest for me (which is why Guy’s offer was impossible to turn down).
Temporary recruitment is about speed, organisation, commerciality and team work. On a permanent desk you may have 2 weeks to find suitable candidates, with a temporary role you want to have spoken to, and presented candidates, within an hour!
In my opinion the core to success is teamwork and the core of this is communication. So every morning all the teams meet first thing to discuss 3 things: the candidates met the day before, how best to find them a new opportunity and then progress on existing roles. In this way the teams and managers have an accurate picture as to what is going on so they can work together to achieve the best results.
It is a fact that we spend up to a third of our week at work - so it is vital that it is a nice place to be, so my ethos is simple. As long as the work get done it is pretty much anything goes - I like laughing and, as I hope my team will tell you, we have a good time in the office. Certainly our ranking in the Times 100 Best Places to Work would suggest we have got this right.
To make sure I don’t lose touch with what is happening I directly manage one of the teams and my style is an involved one. I trust my managers implicitly, and to support them I am directly involved in mentoring all of the temp team. It goes without saying that when it comes to developing business I, like my fellow Senior Managers, deem it my responsibility to get out and in front of clients and further add to our list of customers.
In my opening time here we have added some excellent people to those already on the team and have continued to build a brand that says we do it the right way and to the highest standard. I am proud of my people, the brand, what we do and the way we do it. We have a lot more to achieve and I look forward to achieving it!
