Darren Williams
Position: Associate Director
Was recruitment your first career?
No. I have worked in recruitment for 12 years but prior to that I worked in corporate banking for a large retail bank. The role involved managing a small portfolio of corporate clients which helped me develop influencing, sales and relationship building skills. The exposure to senior contacts within a number of different sectors and types of business was very relevant to recruitment.
What first attracted you to a career in recruitment?
The earning potential, ability to manage my own business and the variety of clients I would come into contact with.
Why did you choose GM over its competitors?
I have been at Goodman Masson for 5 years and when I decided to move from my last company it was vitally important that I made the right choice of employer. I met a number of different organisations ranging from smaller independently owned businesses to larger, established names in the market. I can honestly say that the deciding factor was the quality of the people I met during the interview process. Of course, I wanted a growing business with a good brand name, however, the individuals you work with are the people who help inspire you to achieve greater things. I felt that everyone I met during the interview process were driven, ambitious and high-achievers.
What is the best thing about your job?
From a purely billing perspective, I like the variety of the client base I deal with and the feeling of being successful when I place candidates into difficult to fill roles or win business from clients who have previously never used our services. From a non-billing perspective, as an Associate Director and member of the Senior Management team, I’m also fully involved with training, cross-selling and the direction that the company is taking.
What do you see as the most important aspect of your role?
As someone whose role still has a strong emphasis on revenue generation and recruitment, client development, client retention and candidate management are integral to my role. I get a large number of referrals from clients and candidates and I believe it is the quality of the service I offer which makes me stand out from the crowd and helps me to be successful.
What inspires you outside of work?
I am a big sports fan and enjoy watching teams and individuals compete at the top of their game. Sadly this does not extend to following my football team, West Ham United! Away from sport, I enjoy spending time with my two young children.
