Role Purpose

The purpose of this role is to ensure that the firm has the appropriate systems, framework, rulesets and Machine Learning models to ensure that Sanctions risk is detected and managed accordingly through the design, implementation and maintenance of market leading monitoring tools. Using data analytics, a deep understanding of customer behaviour and financial crime typologies you will help the firm to protect from all Sanctions related risk and regulatory censure whilst minimising the impact upon customer experience, losses and false positive alerts.


  • Part of team leading Lead the development and evolution of financial crime and fraud detection strategies through the implementation of detection rules and, longer term, Machine Learning & AI, in market leading technologies
  • Managing the PEP & Sanctions name screening and Payment Transaction Filtering framework and systems, including updates to the thresholds upon which name and transaction matches will be based
  • Maintain a deep understanding of the business and associated AML & Sanctions risks
  • Ensure that system enhancements are carefully controlled and adhere to any appropriate governance and policy
  • Undertake appropriate analysis to provide reasoned recommendations / options for review by stakeholders including pros and cons of the solution/design ultimately to drive innovation to protect customers and the firm from regulatory censure and financial losses
  • Capture, validate and document business and system requirements ensuring they are in line with the firm's principles & business objectives, or relevant regulation.
  • Business process documentation (process design & documentation including control points and reference to related regulation)
  • Operationalise and productionise models, controls, dashboards, profiles and typologies developed by the Financial Crime team
  • Implement robust testing strategies and processes to ensure confidence that the Sanctions framework and systems to ensure they are operating as intended with risk being managed appropriately
  • Develop and manage the Sanctions roadmap and change agenda ensuring risks are managed, supporting agreed operating plan objectives and the day-to-day business requirements
  • Create accurate and timely information to articulate risk exposure and emerging Sanctions threats, and how to mitigate risks
  • Participate in industry forums where appropriate and Bank wide forums to continuously learn and improve our Sanctions deterrence and detection capability

Required experience/knowledge

  • Current knowledge of Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering regulation and typologies essential
  • Experience in Sanctions framework and system management essential
  • Experience with external 'Sanctions' vendor an advantage
  • Excellent analytical skills and experience to identify the correct strategies to implement into real time technologies
  • Current knowledge of data analytic techniques and technology, including Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence an advantage
  • Use critical thinking skills supported by evidence and metrics to cut through complexity, and make sound decisions and recommendations that are carefully balanced against risk
  • Seek opportunities to challenge and improve current business processes, ensuring the best result for the customer
  • The ability to work flexibly and to tight deadlines
  • Ability to interact with stakeholders in a professional, service-orientated manner
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and advice
