My name is Atta Gyedu, I took on the Career Outreach Role at Programme One back in July this year, and my job is to increase the talent flow of recruiters with Black heritage.
What is Programme One?
In 2020, eight recruitment companies came together and wanted to address the massive underrepresentation of recruiters that identified as having Black heritage.
As a result of that, Programme One was created to remove the inequalities and barriers Black talent face in the recruitment sector.
What does Programme One aim to do?
Today, we are partnered with 11 recruitment agencies who have all committed to these 4 strategic objectives:
1. Removing barriers in the hiring process
2. Widening talent pool strategies
3. Imbed a D&I workplace environment
4. Offer mentorship to every recruiter that comes through Programme One
A strategic objective I initially focused on was to widen the talent pool attraction. One way was by accessing networks that not many organisations would associate good recruiters to come from. For example, I am in partnership with Youth Offenders Institutions, Sixth Forms, Football Clubs and other Not-For-Profit organisations. There are a lot of talent in these networks, but they simply haven’t been exposed to the opportunities recruitment can give them.
What is the importance of Programme One?
My aim is to not only make people in these networks aware of the potential career recruitment can give them, but for existing recruiters to also feel like they belong in the workplace they’re in. The Aleto Foundation has partnered with Programme One to offer a mentorship scheme to every recruiter with Black heritage. The goal of this scheme is for the mentor and mentee to share experiences with each other and to understand the backgrounds they came from. This will hopefully help imbed a more diverse and inclusive culture in the workplace.
