Choosing a future career can be difficult when you are still at school. Work experience gives students the opportunity to learn new skills, meet professionals and gain a better understanding of the working world.
My name is Divsha, and I am 15 years old. I am currently in Year 10 at College. I am Colombian and Bolivian, and I can speak four languages. My favourite subject is English because I enjoy studying language, grammar and literature. I am interested in how language works and how people communicate with each other.
In my free time, I enjoy drawing, learning languages, and playing the violin. In the future, I would like to become a flight attendant because I would like to travel, meet people from different countries and use my language skills in my job.
This week, I completed my work experience placement at Good Together Group. During my placement, I worked with different teams, including finance, administration, recruitment and marketing. The experience gave me valuable insight into how a business operates and allowed me to develop new skills.
On my first day at Good Together Group, I met Faye McCarvel who is the Senior Team Assistant, who showed me around the office and helped me settle in. She made me feel welcome and comfortable from the beginning, which helped me feel less nervous about starting my work experience.
I also met many other members of staff throughout the week. Everyone was friendly, supportive and willing to answer my questions. This created a positive working environment and made my experience enjoyable.
On Monday, I worked with the finance team. First, I spent time with Anna Bundock, who introduced me to Excel formulas. I did not have much experience using Excel, so I found this challenging at first. However, Anna explained everything clearly and helped me understand how formulas are used in the workplace.
On Tuesday, I worked with James Beechey. He showed me how to check invoices and enter the correct information into the company's system. After that, I worked with Ross McCarthy, who gave me client data to upload and organise.
These tasks helped me understand the importance of accuracy and attention to detail when working with financial information.
On Tuesday, I worked with the administration team. In the morning, I spent time with Kim in reception designing banners for the company. This was one of my favourite activities because I enjoy being creative and working on visual projects.
In the afternoon, I helped Faye McCarvel add candidates' names and information to a Word document. This task required organisation and careful attention to detail. I enjoyed helping with this work and learning more about the administrative side of a business.
On Wednesday, I worked with Greg Pollard in the recruitment team. I reviewed CVs and helped identify suitable candidates for an electrician role.
Before this experience, I did not realise how much work recruiters do behind the scenes. Looking through CVs helped me understand the skills and qualifications employers look for when hiring new staff. It also showed me how important it is to present information clearly when applying for a job.
On Thursday, I worked with Katie Howells who is the Marketing Manager and reflected on everything I had learned during my work experience. This gave me the opportunity to think about the skills I had developed and the different departments I had worked with throughout the week.
My work experience taught me a lot about working in a professional environment. I learned how different departments work together to help a business succeed. I also improved my skills using Excel and Word and developed my organisation, communication and teamwork skills.
One important lesson I learned is that it is okay not to know exactly what career you want at my age. Work experience is a great way to explore different jobs and discover new interests.
My favourite part of the week was designing banners with Kim and helping Faye with administration tasks. I enjoyed these activities because they allowed me to be creative while also contributing to the team's work.
Overall, I really enjoyed my week at Good Together Group. Everyone was welcoming, friendly and willing to help me learn. The experience gave me a better understanding of the workplace and allowed me to develop useful skills that will help me in the future. I am very grateful for the opportunity and pleased that I was able to learn something new every day.
