Are you looking for a career that actually moves as fast as you do? In the recruitment world, progression is often used as a buzzword, but at Goodman Masson, it is a tangible reality. If you have been considering working at Goodman Masson, you are likely looking for more than just a desk - you are looking for the freedom to build something entirely your own.
Mia Walsh’s career is the perfect case study in long-term growth. In just under nine years, she has evolved from a Consultant in our first-ever UK Academy to a Sales Director leading the charge in New York.
We sat down with Mia to talk about the non-negotiables of success: world-class training, the leap into management, and the reality of relocating to the world’s most competitive market. See what she had to say...
It started in 2017 when I joined the first-ever Goodman Masson Academy. For anyone thinking about working at Goodman Masson, the Academy is really where the magic happens. It represents the firm’s commitment to growing our own, taking raw talent and turning it into industry-leading expertise.
I credit my early success to the support system I had from day one. In recruitment, your first 12 months define your trajectory. My manager didn’t just set targets; they provided the framework I needed to build a sustainable business. I always felt I had the flexibility to carve out a path that felt authentic to me, rather than following a cookie-cutter career.
If you want a slow-paced role, we are probably not for you! But if you are hungry for growth, this business provides the fuel. Those five promotions weren’t just about hitting numbers; they were about a constant evolution of my remit.
A major turning point for me was in 2021 when I decided to step into management and launch our Investment Management Marketing business. Like many top billers, I was initially hesitant about the management label. However, I soon discovered that coaching and developing a team was one of the most rewarding chapters of my career. Honestly, celebrating a team win often feels better than closing a solo deal. It is that shift from me to us that defines the leadership culture here.
When I realised I wanted to tackle the US market, I didn't just dream about it - I spoke up. After intensive internal discussions, the business gave me the green light to move to New York in April 2023 to launch our US Banking & Financial Services team.
The last 12 months in Manhattan have been the ultimate test. It has been the most rewarding but, at times, the most challenging period of my career so far. Adjusting to different ways of working in a new country helped me mature both personally and professionally. It takes a certain mindset to move 3,000 miles away to establish a brand, but I’ve learned that being uncomfortable is usually where the biggest growth happens.
Awards are great, but for me, plodding or standing still is the ultimate fear. I stay ahead of the curve by constantly resetting my goals; once I reach a peak, I’m already looking at the next mountain.
I also treat the New York office with the same care and passion as if it were my own start-up. Whether it is taking part in extra training or a daunting workshop, I always lean into the resources the business provides. That entrepreneurial ownership is what keeps the momentum going.
If you are ready to start your own story, I have three main pieces of advice:
Mia Walsh’s story is a perfect example of what happens when you combine personal drive with an environment designed to help you win. Whether you are eyeing up our Academy or dreaming of a role in our New York office, the opportunity is waiting for you.
