This World Mental Health Day, we wanted to share ways of identifying mental health and tips on dealing with stress in the workplace and at home.
Identifying Mental Health
You know yourself better than anyone, so it’s important to address changes in your mood when they show up. Common signs that you might be struggling may feel like:
· Feeling low/down for extended periods
· Avoiding social events or activities that you usually enjoy
· Difficulty concentrating or remembering things
· Troubles with sleep
Many people who live with a mental health problem or a developing one, try to keep their feelings hidden because they are afraid of other people’s reactions. Many people feel troubled without having a diagnosed, or diagnosable, mental health problem – although that doesn’t mean they aren’t struggling to cope with daily life.
The workplace, in particular, can be a high-stress environment to be in, it’s very important to reach out to the community of people around you.
Break down the barriers
As we all know, the stigma surrounding mental health and handling stress is the main reason why people don’t reach out for help. Together with friends or work colleagues, you can challenge these common stigmas together:
– Talking about your feelings isn’t ‘attention seeking’
– You’re not overreacting
– You don’t have to ‘man up’ or ‘get over it’
Find your safe space
Does your office space have a well-being room? More and more companies have recognised the benefits of having a well-being room in the office for individuals that may need a quiet space to gather their thoughts when feeling overwhelmed or stressed.
Connect with people around you
Schedule a weekly catch-up with a friend either over facetime or face-to-face. This is a therapeutic way for both parties to unload their stressors in a safe environment. Additionally, getting involved with work social events provides a great opportunity to socialise, connect and unwind with other colleagues in a more relaxed environment.
Never feel alone
With the introduction of agile working, some of us have little interaction with the outside world during our working day. It’s important to ensure you take your lunch break and get some fresh air. Similarly, when you’re in the office, remember to take time away from your desk by having lunch in a communal part of your office or stepping out with a colleague.
